History of Norcross, GA

Norcross, GA got its start in 1869 when entrepreneur John J. Thrasher bought 250 acres of land, right near a stop on the then proposed Richmond Danville railroad. A mere year later, the land was incorporated and Thrasher decided to name it after his friend, Jonathan Norcross. Thus, Norcross was founded.

A few years after its founding, the town gained a reputation as “Atlanta’s Summer Resort” and a commuter train was even constructed in order to ferry visitors from the city to Norcross. The tourists came to escape the hustle and bustle of Atlanta city life and would camp by the Chattahoochee River or stay at a hotel, to enjoy the more relaxed pace Norcross offered. Often by enjoying a concert at the pavilion in Thrasher Park, something many of those who live in Norcross still do to this day.

As the years went on, Norcross, its population, and accolades continued to grow. In the early 1900s, Norcross became the very first place south of the Mason-Dixon line to manufacture a car – the NorX. Norcross can also make the argument that throughout its history, it has produced more professional baseball players per capita than anywhere else in the country. One of the players, Roy Carlyle, even managed to hit a 618 ft. home run that landed him a Guinness World Record.
