Vinings Community
About Vinings, GA
If you’re not familiar with the local lingo, “ITP” refers to “inside the perimeter” of the Atlanta city limits, and references to “OTP” cities mean that these places are “outside the perimeter.” ITP areas include Vinings, which is northwest of downtown Atlanta in Cobb County. The unincorporated Vinings is nestled along the Chattahoochee River, and about 9,600 people call Vinings home. Vinings is a delightful combination of old-fashioned Southern charm and modern sophistication, and there’s plenty to see and do throughout the year in Vinings.
Vinings History
Hardy Pace was one of the first white settlers in the area that would become Vinings. The settlement was initially called Paces, named after Pace, who operated a ferry that crossed the Chattahoochee River. Paces Ferry Road continues to be a major road in Vinings today. Vinings came into existence thanks to the Western and Atlantic Railroad that connected Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tennessee, starting in 1839. William H. Vining was a railroad engineer who was instrumental in building a bridge that would be named Vining’s Bridge. A short time later, the depot that was built in the area was named Vining’s Station. It wasn’t until 1904 that the unincorporated area was officially named Vinings.
