Sleep Apnea in Roswell, GA
A better night’s sleep begins with your dentist.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common problem among men and women who snore. The condition results when muscles around the tongue and throat relax during sleep, blocking the airflow to the lungs. It’s common among men, people over 40, and those who are overweight. Without treatment, it can lead to hypertension, stroke, and even heart failure.
If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, your Imagix Dental of Roswell dentist may be able to help. Those who suffer from mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea can often be treated using an oral appliance. Depending on your needs, there are two types of oral appliances your dentist may recommend:
Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)
The most commonly recommended mouth device for sleep apnea is called a mandibular advancement device, known as MAD for short. Similar to mouth guards used in sports, a MAD fits over the lower and upper dental arches. Metal hinges ease the lower jaw and tongue forward to keep the airway open.
Tongue Retaining Device
This device is basically a splint that holds your tongue in place, keeping your airways open. Unlike the MAD, it doesn’t move the jaw.
Your Imagix Dental of Roswell dentist will work with you to determine which device is best for you based on the cause of your OSA, its severity, and the type of device you feel most comfortable using. After receiving your device, you should have regular check-ups to ensure that the device is working properly. If you notice pain or changes in your bite, adjustments can be made to help alleviate the problem.
