Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Sedation Dentistry in Kennesaw, GA
Not everyone is a fan of visiting the dentist. While it’s not uncommon for children to feel uncomfortable, some parents avoid taking a child to the dentist for proper oral care due to the child’s anxiety. Rest assured, our pediatric specialists will do their best to put your child at ease. In cases where children experience severe anxiety or a gag reflex that precludes treatment, we offer sedation dentistry options to keep them calm and comfortable during dental work.
If sedation dentistry is recommended, the pediatric dentist will administer a non-allergenic, non-irritating gas known as nitrous oxide (N2O). Many people refer to this as laughing gas. In terms of sedation, N2O is one of the safest options available and one of the easiest to administer. Your child will experience a state of relaxation and calm throughout the procedure, allowing her or him to simply have a more pleasant experience.
Prior to the procedure, the dentist will place a mask over the child’s face, and instruct him or her to simply breathe normally into the mask. Within three to five minutes, the N2O takes effect. Your child will be able to respond to requests by the pediatric dentist, while avoiding any pain or anxiety.
There may be some lightheadedness or tingling, but otherwise there is little discomfort. Many children experience a feeling of well-being and euphoria, or feel as if they’re floating. As the child continues to breathe normally following the procedure, the effect of the N2O wears off quickly.
As with adult dental patients, it’s important for children to feel comfortable when visiting the dentist. Skipping dental appointments can be highly detrimental, since regular dental cleanings are the key to good oral health and cavity-free teeth.
Only a dentist can remove the plaque and bacteria missed during regular brushing and flossing. Just as important, only a dentist can spot the early signs of dental disease.
