COVID-19 Safety Message: Visit our practice with confidence – your safety is our top concern.
We’ve reopened in accordance with CDC, O.S.H.A., and State Dental Board guidelines to responsibly resume seeing our patients for regular dental appointments and treatment. We want to assure you of the measures we take to maintain a clean and safe environment so you can continue to receive needed dental care without fear or concern.
A lifetime of healthy, beautiful teeth begins at a very young age. When you visit Hickory Flat Dental, our goal is to create a comfortable and positive experience that results in a long-lasting relationship of trust and safety with you and your child.
What Is Pediatric Dentistry?
Children’s pediatric dentistry is a specialty that focuses on the dental care of babies, children, and young adults. After completing four years of dental school, dentists complete an additional two to three years of training to specialize in the oral care of infants and children through adolescence, including children with special needs. Pediatric dentists also receive hospital training to care for patients with severe dental needs or emergencies that require the care of a pediatric oral surgeon. Your general dentist or pediatrician may refer you to our office for specialized care from our pediatric dental specialists.
Why Should Children Visit a Pediatric Dentist?
The earlier children receive dental care and begin an oral care regimen, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives. Receiving care from a toddler dentist can protect baby teeth from decay and disease through regular cleanings. Our pediatric dental specialists can also provide you with tips to help you properly floss and brush your child’s teeth at home. With the help of our knowledgeable team, you’ll learn how to protect your child’s beautiful smile and promote a lifetime of excellent dental oral health. Please call our office for information regarding the cost of a pediatric dental visit.
When Should I Take My Child to the Dentist?
We recommend scheduling children’s first dental visits by the time they develop their first tooth, and no later than their first birthday. Although it’s common for children to feel frightened by the dentist, there are several ways to make the experience more enjoyable. You can provide your child with a tooth-friendly snack at the end of your appointment, or you can also surprise your child with a fun activity, like a picnic in the park. Choose an enjoyable activity that acts as a positive reinforcement to encourage your child to want to return to the dentist’s office.
What Should I Expect During My Child’s First Dental Visit?
Our team is trained to make children’s dental visits comfortable and fun. We’ll take the time needed to get to know your child and educate parents and children about developing good oral health habits at home and explain dental procedures and techniques in terms that are easy for children to understand.
When you come in for your appointment, one of our children’s dentists will carefully examine your child’s teeth, looking for signs of decay or disease. Our pediatric dentist will also provide a thorough dental cleaning for kids, gently removing bacteria and plaque from the teeth and gums. Your child will also receive a routine x-ray during the appointment. Since children can also develop gum disease, one of our experienced dentists will provide a pediatric periodontics assessment to look for the early signs of inflammation along the gum line.
Our kid’s dentists will also design an individual treatment plan based on the needs of your child. During your appointment, we encourage you to ask your dentist about specific issues related to your child, such as teething or thumb-sucking.
Where Can I Find a Dentist for My Special Needs Child?
Although seeing the dentist can be a scary experience for most children, it can be especially frightening for special needs children. You can take comfort in knowing that our dentists are specially trained in the treatment of children, which can include sedation dentistry and behavior management strategies to help your child feel at ease. Our team will work closely with you to design a dental treatment plan that best meets the individual needs of your child. To learn more about our personalized programs for special needs children, we encourage you to contact our children’s pediatric dentistry office to make an appointment.
