TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) SYNDROME
An estimated ten million Americans suffer from TMJ syndrome. This is a condition in which the TMJ joint does not function properly. This is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the rest of the skull via the temporal bone. We use this joint more frequently than most of the others in our body. The condition causes pain in the muscles and joints of the jaw and can radiate to the face, neck, and head and even the shoulders. There may be difficulty opening the mouth all the way, popping and/or clicking noises when yawning, chewing or other movements of the joint. The causes of TMJ syndrome are usually associated with problems related to the occlusion, or ‘bite’ of the teeth and frequently includes grinding of the teeth. At Imagix, Dr. Arun Nayyar has expertise in treating these afflictions of the jaws and teeth. Incorporating the multiple facets of dentistry creates synergistically positive effects to deal with and treat ailments like TMJ syndrome.
