TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Syndrome
Find relief from face, neck and jaw pain.
If you’re one of the estimated ten million Americans who suffer from Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) syndrome, your Imagix Dental dentist can help. TMJ is a condition in which the TMJ joint, the joint connecting the lower jaw to the rest of the skull via the temporal bone, doesn’t function properly. This sometimes happens because your jaw joints are overstretched. It can also be caused by an injury, teeth grinding due to stress, or rheumatoid or osteoarthritis. The condition typically starts between the ages of 20 and 40 and can last many years.
The TMJ joint is one of the most frequently used in the body, allowing you to talk, chew and yawn. The condition often causes pain in the muscles and joints of the jaw that can radiate to the face, neck, head and even the shoulders. Some TMJ patients have difficulty opening their mouth all the way. Popping and/or clicking noises when yawning, chewing or with other movements of the joint are also common. The causes of TMJ syndrome are usually associated with problems related to occlusion, the bite of the teeth.
If you experience the symptoms of TMJ, schedule a consultation with an Imagix dentist to discuss your options for treatment and therapy.
